The International Charity Day is celebrated on September 5 every year. This day aims to raise awareness and mobilize individuals and organizations to help people in need, through volunteer activities.
The UN chose the date of September 5 in tribute to the anniversary of Mother Teresa of Calcutta’s passing. Mother Teresa indeed dedicated her life to caring for the poor, sick and orphans and dying, and guided the development of the Missionaries of Charity. She received the Nobel Peace Prize for her work in 1979. Therefore, this day also aims to recognize the work of Mother Teresa, and more generally, the role of charity in the relief of humanitarian crises, and therefore seeks to give visibility to organizations and individuals working to help people in need.
